MORE than 10 500 runners and walkers will take to the streets of Wellington on Monday (2 May) for the annual Safari Half-marathon. Entries have closed and it is down to business as some of the country’s top athletes will compete in either the 21,1km half-marathon or 10km walk, as well as the brand new relay event (2 by 10,5km), on Worker’s Day. Athletes also stand a change to win lucky prizes if they wear safari outfits on race day. There is also a 5km fun run, which participants can pre-enter or enter on race day. The half-marathon and relay events both start at 07:15 in Willem Basson Road next to the Boland Rugby Stadium, while the 10km walk has a later start at 09:45 in General Hertzog Boulevard. The 5km fun run starts at 07:10. All races finish at the Huguenot High School in Wellington. This popular Boland road-running event hosted by the Wellington Athletics Club and Wellington Rapportryers, always attracts some of the province’s top runners and is consistently voted one of the best half-marathons in the country. The top athletes will be competing for prize money totalling R35 000, with the half-marathon offering incentive prizes of R1 000 each for the first man and woman to cross the finish line in New Balance shoes.
