SCRAP-METAL thieves are continuing their rampage in Paarl. This a resident discovered this past weekend, when almost ten metres of copper piping was stolen from outside his house. Henry Alley, of Mill Street, was alerted to the theft on Saturday evening, while he was holidaying along the coast. According to Alley, members of AC Rottweiller Security who were patrolling the area spotted a man at approximately 22:00 on Saturday evening walking in Mill Street with a large quantity of copper piping. When he saw the patrol vehicle, he dropped the pipes and his leather jacket and fled the scene. Inside the leather jacket was a glass tube which is used for the smoking of the drug Tik. After closer investigation, the security guards discovered water flowing from Alley’s property. They climbed over the wall and turned the water mains off and contacted Alley about the incident. Plumber Kobus de Kok who was called in to replace the damaged pipes, said that he is inundated by calls to fix stolen copper pipes. “All copper and brass around homes are no longer safe. The only answer is to have metal pipes replaced by plastic pipes, as well as garden taps.”
