TWO men died this weekend in a head-on collision near Franschhoek.

The accident occurred early on Sunday morning on the R45 near Groendal when Klaas Maffa of the farm Môreson was travelling towards Franschhoek in a black Ford Focus. He collided head-on with the vehicle of Rowald Kersvelder of Somerset West.

Police spokesperson Cst Marize Papier said that it is unclear exactly what caused the collision, as there were no eyewitnesses. Both men died on the scene.

These deaths bring the death toll on the R45 near Franschhoek to seven thus far this year.

* Nine passengers of a Nissan bakkie had a narrow escape on Sunday evening, when the driver lost control of the vehicle near Tweede Tol in Bain’s Kloof Pass.

The bakkie plummeted metres down the side of the pass, trapping two of the passengers in the front.

Rescue workers battled for several hours to free the men. Only light injuries were sustained.
