14 parties contest election

A TOTAL of 14 political parties, and a few independents, are contesting the municipal election in Drakenstein in 31 wards. More than 200 local candidates have been registered. Going head to head for control of the municipal council are the ANC, led by councillor Abe Bekeer, and the DA with Gesie van Deventer as mayoral candidate. The other parties (in alphabetical order) are the African Bond of Unity led by Isaac Macapello, the ACDP led by councillor Joseph Matthee, Congress of the People (Cope) led by Keith Sheldon, the Democratic Christian Party led by councillor Solomon Ross, the Khoisan Party led by Izak Windvogel, the National Independent Civic Organisation led by Samuel du Plessis, the National People’s Party with Mariëtte Appollis top of their list, the People’s Democratic Movement led by Derrick Blanckenberg, the SA Progressivie Civic Organisation (Sapco) led by former councillor Dan Kotze, the United Christian Democratic Party with councillor Harish Douman top of their list, the Freedom Front Plus led by councillor Ronald Brand, and the Western Cape Community with councillor Elizabeth Gayiya top of their list. The independent candidates are councillor Nkosinathi Tyesi (ward 5), Eugene Newman (ward 11), Mzuvukile Ntshauzana (ward 16), Derick Brand and councillor Christopher Jochims (both ward 30).
