Dance for all

2005-10-20

THE Dance For All Youth Company will present a performance, Celebration, on Saturday 29 November at 20:00 at the Barnyard Theatre.

This dynamic once-off performance will include works choreographed by, amongst others, Adele Blank of Freeflight dance company and founder DFA students, Thandumzi Moyake and Theo Ndindwe.

The Dance For All Youth Company has a unique signature style that is both neo-classical and Afro-contemporary and the company’s emergence from the successful Dance For All (DFA) project is cause for great celebration.

DFA runs an Outreach Programme of daily dance classes in ballet, African, contemporary, musical theatre, tap and jazz for 500 children in the underprivileged areas of Gugulethu, Nyanga, Khayelitsha, Athlone and the rural area of Barrydale.

More than just teaching dance, these classes help each child develop and grow beyond a physical level, by embracing and promoting the therapeutic benefits of dance; building character, self-esteem, confidence, creativity and self-discipline.

As well as providing a positive extra-mural activity for these children, DFA has become a highly regarded, experienced school of dance, successfully training a new generation of professional South African dancers.

DFA has been able to achieve this through the introduction of its Junior and Senior Training Programmes, headed by Phyllis Spira (Prima Ballerina Assoluta).

These Training Programmes provide 50 especially talented students with intensive dance training to prepare them for careers in the performing arts, should they choose to follow that path.

This year DFA formed the Youth Company (funded by the National Lotteries Board) which consists of eight talented trained artists: Zandile Constable, Bernice Valentine, Mbulelo Jonas, Nceba Jonas, Nqaba Mafilika, Noluyanda Mqulwana, Theo Ndindwa and Xola Putye.

Book now to see the stars of the future in a superb display of diverse dance. Tickets are R90 (students R45) and are available from Robyn at the Barnyard Theatre, 874-1505 or 082-371-3267.
