THE quality of South African Shiraz wines were once again confirmed during an international tasting at the annual La Motte Shiraz Experience.
This year the event was held in Johannesburg where wine experts and connoisseurs tasted a total of ten wines from South Africa, France, Australia and California.
“Shiraz is in the global spotlight as a result of its successes in the new world and in this line-up of icon wines from around the world, the Cape’s new generation wines dominated the top half of the results,” South African wine judge and writer, Michael Fridjhon said.
Taking top honours was the 2001 Penfolds Grange from the Magill Estate in the Barossa Valley, South Australia. Second place went to the 2007 La Motte Pierneef Shiraz Viognier (South Africa) with the 2008 Boekenhoutskloof Syrah (South Africa) in third place, followed by the 2008 Eagles’ Nest Shiraz (South Africa) and the 2004 E Guigal, Côte Rôtie, La Turque (France).
“We are very pleased with the performance of the South African Shiraz in the blind tasting.” says La Motte CEO, Hein Koegelenberg.
The wines were judged by some of the top palates in the South African wine trade and media with Fridjhon, Cathryn Henderson, editor of Wine Magazine and Migual Chan, Deluxe Brand Sommelier for the Southern Sun group, part of the tasting panel.
