THE Drakenstein Municipality is in the process of erecting a service centre of R17 million in Van der Stel Street, Paarl East.

The much needed multi-purpose facility will serve disadvantaged communities in the area through effective partnerships with communities, government departments and the NGO sector, bringing services and facilities closer to the people. The hall is due to be completed in nine months.

Several government departments will be approached to locate their services at the Paarl East Thusong Service Centre.

Construction is well underway, under the project management of CSM consultants and a local construction company, Shatel.

Operational planning will start in the new financial year to ensure that the centre provides the surrounding communities with the governmental, social, educational and recreational needs and programmes as expressed through the consultation and IDP processes.

“This council has implemented a lot over the past five years and we recognize that much must still be done. We are faced with great challenges and the inequalities are huge,” she stated.

Manuel pointed out that about 2000 homes have been built with sanitation and electricity.

“Kilometres of roads have been tarred, whereas previously when people opened their front doors, they only saw dust. Parks and libraries in several areas were built as well as a fire station in Saron and a Service Centre in Mbekweni,”
