Paarl paddlers shine in SA sprints
2011-05-19
SEVEN paddlers from the Paarl Canoe Club picked up Victor and Victrix Ludorum awards in the different age groups at the recently held Pink Lady SA Schools Canoe Sprint Championships 2011. The winners were Klein Nederburg scholar Luke Stowman (Paarl development - u.18 boys), u.16 boys Michael Lee Farringer (Bridge House), u.14 boys Bradley Ruiters (Paarl development/Paarl Boys High), u.12 girls Justine Williams (Paarl development/Sonop Primary), u.10 girls Rebecca Meihuysen (Bridge House), u.10 boys Kelvin Swanepoel (Bridgehouse) and u.8 boys Pierre van der Westhuyzen (Bridge House). The sprints were held from 30 April to 2 May at Nagel Dam in the Valley of a Thouand Hills, Kwazulu-Natal (between Durban and Pietermaritzburg). The major credit for these results has to go to the WCCU junior coach, Wayne August, of Paarl Canoe Club. He has shown again that he is the “winningest” coach in South Africa. These championships were also used to select a SA Schools team to compete at Bochum in Germany later this year. Danie Buys, Michael Lee Farringer, Daniel Pretorius and Luke Stowman (Klein Nederburg) of the Paarl Canoe Club were selected to represent South Africa. Bridge House earned 43 medals (versus 38 last year) giving them the overall winning school trophy for both co-ed junior and co-ed senior schools at the championships. The Paarl development team earned 29 medals (versus 20 for last year). Again this result shows that Paarl Development is arguably the most successful development program in the country.
