Recycling service arrives in Paarl next week

Recycling service arrives in Paarl next week

2011-05-19

FOLLOWING the successful launch of municipal recycling in Wellington’s Ward 2, the door-to-door collection service is now being extended to Wards 4 and 15 in Paarl West.

Beginning on Tuesday 24 May, residents in these two wards can have their recyclable household materials collected on the same day as normal refuse. This includes paper, glass, tins and plastic.

Food waste and non-recyclable materials go as usual into the ordinary black bag.

Free clear bags will be given to residents in which they gather recyclable materials.

Early on the weekly collection day, residents are required to put out their recyclables bag on top of or next to their wheelie bins containing the black bags.

A separate truck will collect and take the recyclables to a materials recovery facility where sorting into the different materials takes place so they can go back into the manufacturing stream.

A ‘starter pack’ containing full details in an information leaflet and a magnetised fridge reminder card will be delivered to all residents in Wards 4 and 15 this week or Monday.

Similar high participation rates in recycling from residents are expected in Wards 4 and 15 as have been achieved in Ward 2.

Updates on the progress of the municipal recycling service will appear each month in the Paarl Post.

Residents who are not yet within the at-source recycling service collection areas can drop off their recycling at various points in the municipal area.

These recycling banks for paper, glass, and other recyclable items can be found along main roads. Recyclables can also be taken to schools and charity organisations that do recycling.

The Paarl Transfer Station can receive recyclables like glass, paper and metal as well as oil filters, cooking oil, automotive oil and household hazardous waste (pesticides etc).

Negotiations with companies are in process to also receive compact fluorescent lights, electronic waste and household medical waste (diabetic needles).

Points to remember:

• Put your bags and bins out early in the morning for collection, to ensure you do not miss the truck.

• Flatten your cardboard boxes when you put them out next to your bin. This speeds up collection and makes storage and processing easier.

For queries about the municipal service, or if you do not receive your free clear bag, contact 021 807 4715 (24 hours).
