Gala launch for new Paarl Mall
2005-10-20
THE Paarl Mall opens today after two years of construction to the tune of R320 million. The event is celebrated with ten days of fun events, live entertainment, special offers and competitions.
Mayor Herman Bailey will cut the ribbon to open the centre officially at 09:00 today.
In the afternoon there will be performances by choirs and African percussion by students of the Frank Pietersen School of Music.
Every day until the end of the month there will be entertainment for kids and adults including face-painting, games, balloon modelling, bead workshop, live music and school choirs.
A Harvest Festival will be held from 27 to 29 October, where you can sample delectable gourmet fare from the Valley.
Big prizes can be won in the Primo Paarl competition starting today, with the lucky draw taking place on 29 October.
The Paarl Mall is expected to draw customers from Paarl, Wellington, Worcester, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch, Tulbagh, Ceres and Malmesbury.
It consists of 36 000m² with 100 stores and restaurants, including anchor tenants Pick ‘n Pay, Edgars and Woolworths.
Visitors can look forward to eating in the shade of full-grown trees in the food court.
The look and feel of the Mall is an interesting blend of contemporary and typical Cape farm styles. Sky and mountain views frame warm, tactile interiors incorporating natural stone and timbers.
In order to alleviate vehicular congestion on the historic Main Street and, at the same time, provide easy access between the new Mall and the N1, a R20 million four-phase road reconstruction programme accompanies the Mall.
* The opening of the Mall coincides with the opening of the new Parys road linking the N1 to Jan van Riebeeck Drive in Paarl.
The northbound carriageway has been completed and will accommodate two-way traffic until the southbound section is completed early next year.
Access to the Paarl cemetery will be temporarily rerouted via Langenhoven Road.
