Violence erupts after election
2011-05-26
MORE than 200 residents of Thembani Square took to the streets on Saturday evening, to protest the re-election of ANC councillor, Victor Mbubu. Mbubu again won the seat for Ward 16 in this year’s municipal election, by 77% of the votes. But it is evident that Mbubu’s opposers were not happy with this victory. According to police spokesperson, Cst Lungi Mqakalana, the group of rowdy residents were unhappy with his re-election due to amongst others, his age and “poor service delivery”. He allegedly does not understand English well. The crowd marched to Mbubu’s house in Thembani Square, threatening him with abusive language and pelting his house with stones. The help of the police was called in and rubber bullets were fired into the air to disperse the crowd. Seven people were arrested and charged with intimidation, malicious damage to property and public violence. No one was injured in the incident.
