THE DA has decisively taken Drakenstein with 57,38% of the votes in Wednesday, with 75 205 voters (65,32%) turning out in this hotly contested municipal election.

Gesie van Deventer is the new mayor of Drakenstein, which has been ruled by the ANC for most of the past decade.

The DA won a total of 22 wards and will have an additional 13 councillors from the PR list for a total of 35 councillors, giving them a clear majority. A total of 84 535 votes were cast for the DA, which lost three wards by 100 votes or less.

The ANC won nine wards and will have an additional 10 proportional councillors as well (a total of 19 seats). A total of 45 818 people voted for the ANC.

Smaller parties which won proportional seats are the NPP with 5524 votes (2 seats), Cope with 4640 votes (2 seats), ACDP with 1480 votes (1 seat), Sapco with 1066 votes (1 seat) and the People’ Democratic Movement with 1010 votes (1 seat).

The proportional DA councillors are Gesie van Deventer, Lulu Ntlemeza, Koos le Roux, Clara Meyer, Elna von Schlicht, Ntobeko Qebenya, Rean Smuts, Gert Combrink, Noel Adams, Jo-Ann de Wet and Felix Cupido.

The DA ward councillors are Johannes Rademeyer, Elize Smit, André Koegelenberg, Ruth Arnolds, Christephine Kearns, Aidan Stowman, Soudah Ross, Loekie Niehaus, dr Lourens du Toit, Albertus Buckle, Ben de Goede, Esther Kearns, Eva Gouws, Lutisia Daries, Willem Naudé, Miriam Adriaanse, Amina Pietersen, Wendy Philander, Conrad Poole, Reinhardt van Nieuwenhuyzen, dr Thys Smit and Gerald Witbooi.

The ANC proportional councillors are Abraham Bekeer, Sharon Davids, Wilhelm Nothnagel, Zuko Gwada, Charmaine Manuel, Colin Rens, Linda Landu, Amelda Afrika, Luvuyo Bolani and Nombuyiselo Mtiki.

The ANC ward councillors are Collin van der Westhuizen, Vuyuni Hlati, Lungile Magala, Mpelese Tshaya, Tembikile Mangena, Mhlangabezi Msolo, Sonwabo Lumko, Victor Mbubu and Jerome McHelm.

The two councillors of Cope are Keith Sheldon and Cupido Ross. The two councillors of the NPP are Mariëtte Appolis and William Petersen.

The ACDP’s Joseph Matthee, Sapco’s Dan Kotze and People’s Democratic Movement’s Derrick Blanckenberg have also made it onto the Council via the proportional vote.

Council is to convene Monday at 14:00 in the Paarl Town Hall to elect the mayor, deputy mayor and speaker as well as the executive councillors and councillors delegated to the Cape Winelands district council. A process for the establishment of ward committees will also be initiated.

) In Franschhoek the DA’s Aldridge Frazenburg won Ward 1, while the ANC’s Nombulelo Ntsunguzi won Ward 2. In Klapmuts, ANC councillor John Anthony lost to the DA’s Sophie Louw by a small margin.
