Four yellow cards in Vineyards and Standards battle
2011-05-26
THE local Fish King rugby derby proved to be a much closer affair than their previous encounters last season when Vineyards ran in 6 tries to 1 to beat Young Standards by 35-7. Four yellow cards (two on each side) and six blood bin replacements during the course of the game were testimony to the hard-fought battle between these old foes. Vineyards, without several injured key forwards, had to stand up and be counted to overcome the improved Young Standards team, who this time fielded a much heavier pack of forwards than Vineyards. Young Standards tried to get under the skin of the Vineyards players and the mood was set with captain Adlee Moerat, (centre) being sin-binned in the first few minutes of the game after retaliating with a punch to opposition centre, Elroy Arendse, leaving him with a bloody nose. Standards elected to play the forward game in the first half and restricted Vineyards to a 13-0 lead with a try by Anwar-Shuhail Moerat (centre) and three successful kicks by fly-half Dayne Peterson. Immediately after the interval, Vineyards scrum-half Alvin Farmer launched a counter attack from his try line and did well to offload to speedster Denver Chuky, who ran in for a 50 metre try. Dayne Peterson (fly-half) added the two points. Vineyards assumed that with the 20 point advantage the game would open up, but that was not to be. They encountered strong defence from a spirited Young Standards side and could not add any more points to their total. With Brendon van Schoor (flank) and Henley Goliath (prop) leading from the front, Young Standards edged the set-pieces whilst Vineyards through Shaheed Peterson, (lock) dominated the line-outs. Standards did have several scoring chances as the game progressed, but were squandered by forward passes and dropped balls. Vineyards’s 100% record continues after six games. They play Albions next week while Standards take on Violets.
