Paarl paddlers hot despite cold

2011-06-02

IT was overcast and cold last Sunday in Elgin, but without the driving rain and windy, gusty conditions that the K1 championships were paddled in the previous day, some of the Paarl paddlers put their hands up when they competed in the K2 classes ranging from u.14 to the Great Grandmasters classes.

In the senior men’s event, the first two laps saw the favourites of Lance King and Heinrich Schloms (Milnerton/Paarl) racing with the two Peninsula K2s, Edgar Boehm jnr and Graeme Solomon, and Alastair Glass and Sean Rice pulling away from the field, until coming out of the second portage and after a very good run, King and Schloms raced away on their own.

Working together, the two Peninsula K2s crews managed to retrieve some of the distance lost on the leaders. Boehm and Solomon eventually taking second place ahead of Glass and Rice on a sprint finish to the line.

Other place winners from the Paarl Club were: senior men second Edgar Boehm jnr/Graeme Solomon 2:01:59. u.14 first Bradley Ruiters/Theo Moses 00:59:49 and second David Meihuizen/Francois Roux (Prl/WNB) 59:56. u.18 - second Daniel-Louis Buys/Luke Stowman 01:29:15 and third Jerome Willemse/Jason Minaar 01:41:11.

In the veteran men’s category Herbert Conradie/Gary Cromie (Prl/SOS) in 01:27:32 finished first with sub masters Rob Hart/Johan Swart (Pen/Prl) in 01:40:26 also in the first place

In the sub grandmasters JT Basson/Gerhard Beukes (Prl/Maties) in 01:41:43, finished first with René Boehm/Eric Farringer (Sim/Prl) 01:49:05 in the second place.

In the K1 championships held on Saturday, junior Paarl paddlers also had some success. Winners in some of the categories were: u.8 boys Pierre van der Westhuizen (00:29:21), u.10 boys Luc van der Westhuyzen (00:29:27), u.10 girls, Rebecca Meihuizen 29:18, u.12 boys 1. In the u.16 boys’ categorie Michael-Lee Farringer 01:42:44 finished first with Daniel-Louis Buys 01:54:06 in the third place.
