Lawlessness not to be tolerated

THE local police will no longer be tolerating disturbances which are caused due to the use of alcohol.

Although the amended Western Cape Liquor Bill has not officially been passed, certain regulations of this act will however now be policed.

Paarl police spokesperson, Capt Louise du Plessis, this week said that a zero tolerance approach will be implemented against drinking in public areas, as well as drinking and driving.

The regulations, which will now be policed, prohibit anybody from consuming liquor in a motor vehicle, all passengers included, whether the vehicle is driven or parked.

Drinking in public areas is also prohibited. Anyone who contravenes this regulation can be fined a minimum of R500 to a maximum of R100 000.

Du Plessis added that fines will be given for disturbance of the peace, which includes loud music being played from motor vehicles, as well as urinating in public.

“The Paarl Police will not hesitate to confiscate motor vehicles used in transgressing the above laws.”

The public is asked to keep the police sector telephone number at hand to report such misdemeanours.

The Western Cape Liqour Bill is due to be approved towards the end of the year.
