CRIMINALS posing as compost pedlars have struck again. Two weeks ago Paarl Post reported on a dog which had disappeared from a property in Northern Paarl, shortly after three men in a bakkie tried to sell compost to residents. The dog was however returned to its owners a week later, after it had been sold, allegedly by the compost pedlars, to a young man in Paarl East. But this week, similar pedlars were apprehended by the long arm of the law. Early on Friday morning, the Paarl police received a complaint about theft from a motor vehicle in Langenhoven Avenue, Denneburg. The complainant had found the passenger door of his vehicle forced open and his sound system had been stolen. While reacting to this complaint, police officers noticed a suspicious bakkie near the scene of the crime. The vehicle, with four passengers in it, was pulled over and searched. Evidence of compost was found in the back of the bakkie and the suspected stolen sound system was also in the vehicle. Chesron Fountain (18), Randall Grace (21), Ricardo Harry (31) and Desmond Sampson (22) were subsequently arrested. According to various residents, this bakkie and its passengers have been seen on numerous occasions in the area trying to sell compost. Police spokesperson Capt Louise du Plessis said that on further investigation it has been established that these men have been linked to three other cases of theft out of motor vehicles in Paarl.
