Wandering animals are a great danger on the roads at night
2005-10-20
I WAS recently involved in a collision with a cow. The vehicle was written off, the cow died almost instantly and the occupants of the car narrowly escaped death or serious injury.
We were lucky, but in response to our story heard of many others who were not.
Motorists have to be warned that there is grave danger in a collision with the many animals that are seen grazing on our roadsides.
Nighttime driving especially has not only become hazardous but possibly fatal, as it can be almost impossible to see these animals when they stray onto the roads in the dark.
Our family has been outraged at the regularity of this kind of occurrence and the fact that nobody appears to want to take any responsibility for the safety of animals or vehicles.
These are domesticated and not wild animals, surely they must belong to somebody, and if so, must be controlled?
We were also appalled at the nonchalance of the police in their handling of the situation, and the fact that they removed the carcass without any attempt or promise to identify it or its owner, and its removal in direct contravention to regulations. Until measures to remove these dangers are applied I advise all road users to take extreme caution when driving at night, and where possible, to avoid back roads at night.
I would like any reader who has had a similar experience to contact me on 072-140-7585.
