Bursaries for student winemakers

THE Cape Wine-makers Guild has awarded study bursaries to three oenology and viticulture students at Elsenburg College and Stellenbosch University as part of its on-going Protègé Programme to further the development of young aspiring wine-makers.

The bursaries provide the students with financial support during their final year of study, after which they can apply for the Guild’s three year internship programme.

This year’s recipients of the Cape Winemakers’ Guild Protégé Bursaries are Heinrich Kulsen of Paarl who is currently at Elsenburg, studying for his B.Agric degree in Cellar Technology, as well as Arlene Mains from Blackheath and Brenton Maarman from Oudtshoorn who are both at Stellenbosch University completing a B.Sc. degree in Viticulture and Oenology.

Heinrich would love to work in a top quality wine cellar where employees are success-driven and motivated to maintain excellence and standards.

“Being the perfectionist I am, I will strive to achieve excellence in every bottle of wine I produce, as this is the only recipe for making top quality wines,” explains Heinrich.

Arlene sees herself running a tight ship to produce top quality wine.

“I have learnt that only hard work can achieve greatness and success. Wine-making is an art, a culmination of science, experience and creativity. As a wine-maker it will be my job to bring these facets together to create a wine which is absolutely sublime,” says Arlene.

Brenton wants to create wines that will put the farm on the map. He is also eager to become a mentor to farm workers who show a passion for wine-making and to encourage them to study further in wine.

“Hopefully I will become an award-winning wine-maker someday, working at a winery that tries to reduce its carbon footprint and that helps to change the life of the farm workers for the better,” says Brenton.

Once they have graduated, these aspiring winemakers will be able to apply for a possible three-year internship with the Cape Wine-makers Guild Protégé Programme, which offers them the opportunity to learn from, and work alongside some of the country’s best wine-makers who are members of the Guild.

The Cape Winemakers Guild Protégé Programme was launched in 2006 under the auspices of the Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Development Trust with the goal of bringing about transformation in the wine industry by cultivating, nurturing and empowering promising individuals to become wine-makers of excellence.

This is the third year that the Guild with the assistance of Agri-Seta has awarded these study bursaries which require outstanding marks and an excellent aptitude for wine-making.

Students interested in applying for the Protégé Programme can visit the Guild’s website at www.capewinemakersguild.com.
