Soccer spirit reigns on Youth Day

Soccer spirit reigns on Youth Day

2011-06-23

DESPITE the heavy rains in Paarl on Youth Day, soccer reigned with ten teams entering the Paarl Youth Day soccer tournament. In spite of the pouring rain, players gave their all in the difficult, muddy conditions.

In the u.18 final Paarl took the lead against Wellington Saints after Suhail Seria lashed an excellent shot into the roof of the net.

Saints hit back immediately to equalise as the home team relaxed. The score remained 1-1 at full-time and Saints claimed the victory as Paarl were unable to convert their penalties.

Paarl’s goalkeeper, Chadwin Volmink, received the title for the goalkeeper of the tournament after a series of excellent saves.

In another Wellington Saints game the u.18 player of the tournament, Keegan Daniels, scored an excellent diving header against Beverly Hills United with his team easy winners against a team just starting out.

Beverly Hills United, under coach Lodewyk Goosen and assistant coach Waldo Schwarts, were taking part in their first tournament and they need to be congratulated for winning the Fair Play trophy for their sporting behaviour.

In another u.18 match, Siphokhule Msalo scored four goals for Paarl Soccer Club against Bridges Academy, while Jason Januarie, Glenville Liebenberg and Giovanni Johannes were also outstanding for this club.

The u.18 plate final was contested between Bridges Academy and Beverly Hills United.

The match was a nail-biting thriller with Beverly Hills ahead until the final minutes when a wonder strike by Stepheny Cowell, the only female player in the Bridges team, drew the sides level.

Within seconds, with the United players flagging, a Bridges striker tapped in an easy shot to secure the victory.

In the u.14 section Mbekweni Sundowns and Try Again and Groenheuwel Primary fought it out for the top places. In the u.14 final, Try Again triumphed over Sundowns in a penalty shootout, mainly through the heroics of the Try Again goalkeeper.

The quality of play from both Mbekweni teams was excellent. Groenheuwel Primary was the Plate Final winner.
