Grateful vir visit to Parliament
2011-06-23
I AM grateful to the Democratic Alliance for giving us a Mayoral Committee Councillor for Youth and Sport that understands the issues of young people and is able to give direction as to how the Municipality should institutionalise and approach issues of young people. I am refering to Councillor Jonathan Qebenya who went out of his way to accommodate more than 20 youths from different political parties and youth organisations across Drakenstein Municipality to attend the National Youth Parliament in Cape Town. It was the first time that I got invited to a national youth event of that calibre where we could sit in Parliament and actually debate in the presence of the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly and Chairperson of the National Council of Province on matters affecting young people in the country. Afterwards we attended the National Assembly where our resolutions were tabled. I am an ANC supporter, but have to say I never got invited to any serious events where I could participate meaningfully and never in my wildest dreams could I imagine being invited by a DA councillor. This invitation, trip, the humility and tremendous wealth of knowledge that the councillor has with regards to youth and sports development is amazing and encouraging and I am looking forward to seeing how youth and sports development will be managed in Drakenstein.
