2011-06-23

ONE of the world’s foremost panflute and guitar duos, Verso, will share the stage with the winner of the First Cape Town International Guitar Festival at the Nederburg Concert on Sunday July 3 at 17:00 at the Nederburg Manor House recital room.

Panflute player Matthijs Koene and guitarist Stefan Gerritsen founded Verso in 1997 and are renowned for their passionate performance of classical music, as well as an ever-expanding contemporary repertoire.

Indeed, one of the duo’s most important goals is the creation of distinguished repertoire for panflute and guitar.

To date more than 40 works have been written for this special combination.

The outstanding expression of the instruments is put to use in a very broad range of styles, from Dowland, Giuliani and Piazzolla, to the newest music by Theo Loevendie, Artyum Kim, Daan Manneke, Gerard Beljon, and Louis Aguirre among others.

Appreciation for the duo is not only expressed by audiences across the world, but by the commendations of juries at international contests and the award of many prizes, including the Comradio contemporary music prize (Barcelona 2003), placement in the finals of the Concert Artists Guild music competition (New York 2005 and 2006) and the IBLA Grand Prize Top Winner Award and Piazzolla Award (Italy 2006).

Audience members at the Nederburg Concert will also be treated to a performance by a new up-and-coming guitarist, when the winner of the First Cape Town International Guitar Festival takes to the stage.

The festival is held at the beginning of July and will see talented young guitarists competing from all over the world.

The first prize includes the opportunity to perform at Nederburg alongside Verso.

Tickets are R150 per person and include a welcoming drink and delicious light supper snacks served with fine Nederburg wines after the recital.

Bookings can be made by calling 021 809 8106 or 021 809 8344 or you can send an email to ialbers@distell.co.za or skmor kel@distell.co.za.
