2011-07-07
LOCAL Greenfields side, Red Devils, gave Paarl u.18’s too much to do, after crashing in two goals in the first ten minutes of their friendly match last week in Paarl. The Red Devils won 4-3. The home side was blitzed by the speed of the visitors’ attack. The first goal was a powerful strike that left keeper, Volmink, helpless. The Red Devils continued to push forward creating a string of chances, but were unable to capitalise on some poor defending. Just before half-time Paarl was fortunate when a goal by Esley Hennings reduced the deficit. In the second period the Red Devils again streamed forward in numbers and after a bout of pressure, struck a third goal. Coach Robbie Meyer made a couple of changes and the Paarl team began to gain the upper hand. Esley Hennings, after a persistent run, stole a second goal for Paarl. With twenty minutes left the Red Devils swooped to go 4-2 up. Lyle van Rooyen, Paarl’s captain, crashed a stinging volley wide as the home side fought to get back into the match. A foul on Paarl’s Suhail Seria led to a penalty which was easily dispatched by captain van Rooyen to bring the score to 4-3. Paarl continued to press in the final minutes, but the visitors held out for a deserved victory.
