Tote robbed after Durban July
2011-07-07
GAMBLERS had to lie low on Saturday afternoon amid the July horse racing fever, when a local tote was robbed in broad daylight. The incident occurred at 15:30 at the Robin Hood Tote at Shah’s Corner in New Rest, Wellington. At the time of the robbery the tote was still packed with gamblers shortly after the ever popular Durban July. Six men entered the building and approach-ed the cashiers. One of the robbers produced a firearm and demanded that they hand over all the money. They then fled with an undisclosed sum of cash. Robin Hood Tote was also robbed of thousands of rands last year, also hours after the Durban July. Nobody has so far been arrested. Anyone with information related to this incident can contact Adj Gilly Kiewiet at 021 864 9600. * A white Mercedes Benz station-wagon was discovered deserted in Mbekweni on Saturday. It is suspected that this vehicle was used by the suspects who last Monday robbed American Swiss jewellers in Wellington. Anyone who can help the police with their investigation is asked to contact Wellington detectives on 021 864 9600.
