ACROSS the country, people will commemorate Mandela’s birthday on 18 July by contributing to some humanitarian action or intervention.
The executive mayor of Drakenstein Municipality, Gesie van Deventer, together with her deputy, Councillor Conrad Poole, and Councillor Esther Kearns, visited Ward 20 in Paarl East to commemorate Mandela Day. Kearns is the Portfolio Holder for Public Complaints and Ombudsman.
Their humanitarian actions included the cleaning of the play park in the Nederburg flats and Kingston Town area to encourage the community to keep their area clean.
Councillor van Deventer said that one of Madiba’s long held values was to improve the lives of people by serving the community.
“Therefore we as the people of Drakenstein should take 67 minutes of our time to celebrate this special birthday of our beloved Madiba.
“The 67 minutes of humanitarian work are for the 67 years that Madiba contributed to our country to improve the lives of many people.
“I plead with you as the people of Drakenstein to make a difference within the community and always keep your area clean,” said the Mayor.
The Deputy Mayor encouraged people to commemorate the sacrifice that was made by one of the most iconic and influential people in the world, former President Nelson Mandela.
“We as the Drakenstein Council wish to make a difference in our communty.”
