Double header win for Paarl soccer masters
2011-07-14
THE u.35 team from Paarl Soccer Club continued their winning ways last Wednesday (6 July) by beating an above average team from Eerste River 4-0. With a large number of spoilt chances by the strikers throughout the match, the masters from Paarl still managed to overcome their opponents by using the right winger Johannes Wildschutt optimally to score two goals, with Kelvin Mc Kenzie adding one and captain James Philander completing the scoring with a well-taken penalty kick. The boys were kept in the match by an excellent display by the goalkeeper, William Alkaster, who was also named man of the match on the night. On Friday, the team travelled to Bonteheuwel in Cape Town, where they played their second round encounter against log leaders, Citrus Spurs. Because of the superior position of the opponents, it was always going to be tough for the team from Paarl to beat the leaders of the pack who were favourites before the start of the encounter. Needless to say, with the match goalless at half-time, the team from Paarl believed that they would clinch the match and started the second half with a positive approach by maintaining an attacking pattern with good, solid defensive play. This paid off late in the second half with a superbly taken header by leading goal scorer, Lionel Matthee, who received a sublime ball inside the penalty area from Johannes Wildschutt. This only goal came very late in the match and the boys from Paarl had to keep their nerve for the next 10 minutes. The defence from the Paarlites did just that and managed to take maximum points out of the match by winning this encounter 1-0. This sees them climbing to one of the top three league spots on the log.
