THE South African oboist André van Daalen, will perform at the concert in the Nederburg Manor House on 31 July at 17:00.

Accompanied by Albie van Schalkwyk, van Daalen will play works by Schumann, Nielsen, Saint-Saëns and Ravel.

“The emphasis in this programme is on pieces that demonstrate the vocal qualities and virtuosity of the oboe,” explained van Daalen, who made South African musical history when he became the first oboist to win the national ATKV Muzique Competition in 2004.

After graduating at the University of Stellenbosch, he continued his studies in Germany and Spain. Following three years as a member of the Stuttgart State-Opera Orchestra, he was appointed principal cor anglais player in the Hessian State Theatre Orchestra in Wiesbaden, Germany, in 2010.

His performance is part of a South African tour.

Van Daalen started out playing recorder as a child, but wanted to learn an orchestra instrument as well.

“The logical choice was one of the woodwind instruments because of the similarities to the recorder and after listening to recordings of the various woodwind instruments in the orchestra I decided upon the oboe.”

Tickets are R150 and include a welcoming drink and delicious light supper snacks served with wine after the recital.

Bookings can be made by emailing ialbers@distell.co.za or skmorkel@distell.co.za or by calling 021 809 8106.
