A TOTAL number of 914 water systems from 162 municipalities across South Africa were assessed for the 2011 Blue Drop Certification process of which only 66 water systems (7,2%) were awarded Blue Drop Certification.

Of the total number of 66 Blue Drop Certifications that were awarded during June 2011, Drakenstein Municipality performed remarkably well by receiving 3 Blue Drop Certificates.

Drakenstein comprises of five water systems for which three received Blue Drop Status (rating in excess of 95% for drinking water managing excellence. These were the Drakenstein (Paarl/Wellington) System, Bainskloof System and Gouda System.

The Saron System achieved a rating of 91,79% and the Hermon System achieved a rating of 88,25%, both reflecting “Very good Drinking Water Quality Management”.

The Municipality furthermore achieved a Municipal Blue Drop Score of 95,72% compared with the National score of 72,9%.

This rating places Drakenstein in 7th position in the Western Cape where 123 systems of 27 municipalities were assessed.

The high ratings serve as assurance to Drakenstein consumers that their drinking water quality and water quality management processes are of a very high standard and that it is safe to use tap water. A Blue Drop achievement is thus an excellent achievement.
