Ten year sentence
2011-07-21
THE young man who held an elderly man hostage in Franschhoek earlier this year, has been sentenced to ten years in jail for robbery and kidnapping. The court heard that Darryl Kriel (24) had been homeless and hadn’t eaten or slept in four days after losing his job and as a result he had turned to crime. He held up Peter Frank (70) in his home in Roux Street with a toy pistol on 6 February. His wife, Cornelia, escaped through the window in search of help. Regional magistrate Patrick Ross said, “The court cannot allow the whole community to be put behind bars. The court has to send a powerful message in order to protect the rights of others.”
