Seven goal thriller in Paarl o.35 match
2011-07-21
IT was a match of two different halves when the o.35 team of Paarl S.C. played Jamestown on Friday evening at home on the Boy Louw sports ground. The visitors won 4-3. The home team started the match more attacking towards the opponents who had to do everything possible to counter the team from Paarl going forward whenever the ball was in their possession. This paid off for Paarl when Lionel Matthee scored a well-taken half volley 10 minutes into the match for the opening goal. The opponents later capitalised on a penalty to draw level and when Keith Moses from Paarl received a quick ball from the goalkeeper just before half-time, he made no mistake to put the maestros from Paarl in the lead again with a clinical finish after a well-timed run from the halfway line. With the Paarlites in the lead at the break, one would have expected them to capitalise on this, but it was not to be for them when just after the break, Jamestown converted after more tactful play by their midfielders who started in the same manner as the home team did in the first half. This had them more fired up with the Paarl team looking a different outfit from the team that started this encounter. Midway through the second half, Jamestown managed to take the lead when they scored their third for the night after sloppy play by the team from Paarl who allowed them in after numerous attacks on goal. However, Paarl’s persistence paid off soon after when Jamestown put the ball into their own net after a stint of brilliant attacking from the Paarlites that was surely missed for most of the second half. This made things level at 3-3 and with not too much time left on the clock, it looked like the teams would share the spoils on this one. With just four minutes left, the away team managed to sneak in a late one to grasp the 3 log points from their opponents who looked the more likely winners for most of the match. Paarl conceded one too many and finished the match with no log points to show for their outstanding effort. The result of the match was probably not a true reflection of the effort by the Home team, but the captain, James Philander, who also walked off with the “Man of the Match” honours, complimented his troops for a hard fought thriller. It was a good spectacle to watch for the large number of spectators who came to support the boys from Paarl marching on in their 2011 campaign.
