Great start for the Cavaliers

THE Regent Boland Cavaliers enjoyed a great start to the Absa Currie Cup First Division at the Boland Stadium in Wellington on Saturday with a very impressive 69-12 victory over the Border Bulldogs. The half-time score was 31-12 for the Cavaliers. Director of coaching, Loffie Eloff, said he is proud on how his team handled the game. “Al-though Border wanted to keep it loose, Boland kept its structure right through the match. We scored excellent tries,” he added. The Cavaliers scored 9 tries in the process with Brendon April and Willie le Roux scoring two tries each. Elgar Watts slotted 11 kicks from 11 attempts at goal, which included 9 conversions and 2 penalties. It all started in the sixth minute when the evergreen scrumhalf and captain of the home team Bolla Conradie intercepted the ball on the halfway line to score the first try of the match. Tries from Clemen Lewis and Danwell Demas followed soon after for Boland, whereafter Ntabeni Dukisa of Border opened the scoring for the visiting team with a good five pointer. Boland were awarded a penalty try after fullback Willie le Roux got tackled without the ball on his way to the tryline, but Border’s eighthman, Roy Bursey, had the last say of the first half with a good try. Willie le Roux got his first of two tries two minutes into the second half, with the other second half tries being scored by Boland’s Cornal Hendricks and replacement wing Brendon April (2 tries). Tomorrow the Bolanders will take on the Griffons in their second Absa Currie Cup match in Welkom. “We don’t have a good track record in Welkom and the team decided that this has to change,” Eloff added.
