Phola Park protests housing

Phola Park protests housing

2005-03-24

THE Chief Director of the provincial housing department, Seth Maqethuka, has pledged to meet the Mbekweni Social Development Forum (MSDF) on Tuesday 5 April to discuss the problem the forum has with the Drakenstein Municipality.

This follows a protest march by 70 angry residents of Phola Park who occupied the provincial housing offices in Cape Town for nearly four hours last Tuesday.

The protestors claim that the Drakenstein Council is not following the letter of the People’s Housing Process (PHP) which puts recipients of government housing subsidies in charge of the building of their homes.

They say recipients were given houses of 26 square metres instead of the 36 square metres stipulated by the PHP.

Furthermore, they claim the municipality was forcing inferior building materials on them by “dumping” at building sites.
