Wife-murder case to be heard in December
2011-08-11
THE trial of the young Franschhoek man who is accused of murdering his wife, will be heard on 6 December in Paarl Regional Court. The body of Du Toit’s wife, Chanel (28), was discovered by his mother, Ronelle, on 7 July last year, in the couple’s cottage on Dieu Donné Estate. Du Toit, who had allegedly gone hunting in the Northern Cape in the early hours of the same morning, phoned his mother and asked her to check on Chanel as he was unable to contact het. There was evidence of a struggle in the cottage and Chanel had been strangled to death. Du Toit was arrested eight days later and charged with his wife’s murder. During his appearance in the Paarl Regional Court last week, the prosecution indicated that they had the necessary DNA evidence and blood and skin samples to continue with the hearing. The prosecutor, Chris Abrahams, and Du Toit’s lawyer, William Booth, said that they are in the process of discussions to conclude the case as soon as possible.
