THE Drakenstein Municipality plans to institute a Waste to Energy project by burning waste at the municipal landfill site, generating electricity at the same time.
The project, planned for implementation by 2014, will reduce waste by about 61% and generate approximately 16 000 MWh of electricity per annum.
It will be the first project of its kind in the country and will be private-public partnership with a specialist company which will manage the landfill site.
A feasibility study on the partnership, and an environmental impact study, must be completed and the approval of the National Treasury must be obtained before the project can be approved and the final contract signed.
The recommended bidder for the project, Interwaste, must obtain the required statutory licences and environmental authorisations.
