DNA tests to identify child

POLICE pathologists are investigating the decomposed body of an unidentified child which could possibly be linked to the mystery of a missing Franschhoek boy.

The five-year-old Amila Mahlamvu disappeared without a trace from an informal settlement in Franschhoek almost four months ago.

Amila had been playing with a two-year-old friend at the end of March high against the slopes of Langrug. The toddler returned home unscathed, but Amila was not seen again. He could not give an explanation for Amila’s disappearance.

A massive search was launched for Amila with the help of 50 members of the police, the K9-unit, volunteers and a search helicopter.

The mountains surrounding Langrug were scanned for five days, but there was no sign of the boy.

But recently a body of a child resembling Amila was discovered in Phillipi East. The body was partially decomposed and blood tests have been taken from Amila’s mother, Thembeka, to assist with DNA tests which could determine the identity of the child.
