GIRLS from the SA Golf Development Board (SAGDB) performed impressively at the Boland Ladies' Golf Amateur Championships recently.

The Championships, sponsored by Boland Nomads, were contested in both strokeplay and matchplay formats.

The 36-hole strokeplay competition was held on Sunday 9 October, and the top finishers moved through to the matchplay on the Monday and Tuesday.

Lee-Ann Tiemie and Vivian Floris from Paulus Joubert Secondary School in Paarl, and Hybre Davids (Gordon High) were the SAGDB’s star performers.

The three led the way in the C-division of the competition for players with handicaps of 19 to 33.

Tiemie played superbly to win the C-division strokeplay, recording rounds of 88 and 102 off her 24 handicap.

Her nett total of 142 was also the best nett in the division, as well as the best nett score of any of the juniors.

As a further achievement, her first round nett score of 64 was the best of the championships.

Floris shot rounds of 107 and 104 for a total of 211. This secured her fifth place in the division, as well as the second best nett score amongst the juniors.

Tiemie, Floris and Davids then went through to the matchplay, and all three reached the semi-finals.

Davids beat Floris four-and-three in the first semi-final, while Tiemie lost to Bianca Vlok in her semi.

The final between Davids and Vlok see-sawed for the first nine, before Vlok pulled away to win four-and-three.

Cynthia Rayner, president of the Boland Ladies' Golf Union, was thrilled at the girls’ performances.

“It’s great that all four girls in the semi-finals were juniors,” she said.
“They’ve all got such talent, and I’m sure none of them will still be in the C-division next year.”

To add a nice touch to proceedings, the two SAGDB girls that lost in the matchplay semi-finals offered to caddie for the two finalists. Their team spirit and enthusiasm was commended by the tournament
organisers.
