Mayoral rugby tournament soon
2011-08-25
DUE to the very popular Soccer Mayoral Cup being hosted with great success by the Drakenstein Municipality for the past five years, the demand for a similar rugby event grew bigger each year. With the hype around the Springbok team on its way to New Zealand to defend their World Cup crown, 2011 seemed the perfect year in which to launch the rugby-version of the Mayoral Cup, with the focus on the development of rugby in the Drakenstein municipal area. The Junior Mayoral Cup Rugby Tournament (co-hosted by the Boland Rugby Union) will take place at the Dal Josaphat Stadium in Paarl during the September school holidays (from 3 to 7 October, with teams from Saron, Gouda, Hermon, Wellington, Mbekweni, Paarl and Simondium taking part. A function to officially launch this tournament will be held at the Boland Rugby Stadium (Flappie Lochner Hall) this Saturday (27 August). This function will also serve as a send-off for Springbok coach Peter de Villiers, as he will soon be departing with the rest of the Springbok team on their way to New Zealand, in their quest to successfully defend their World Cup title.
