TWO paintings valued at nearly R100 000 have been stolen from the Huguenot Memorial Museum in Franschhoek.

The paintings literally disappeared from the museum in broad daylight last month.

According to the Franchhoek Tattler, the two paintings, measuring only 15 x 20 cm were painted by Hugo Naudé in 1934. They were purchased by the museum in 1993 for R18 000 each.

According to museum staff, the theft took place between 13:00 and 13:20 of 14 July. They added that at the time of the theft, a white man was visiting the museum. He was seen leaving with a coat hanging over his arm. Police are in the process of compiling an identikit of the suspect which may lead to an arrest.

Anybody who can help the police with their investigation is asked to contact WO Jaco van der Bank on 021 876 8061.

* Also recently in Franschhoek, a bronze bust of a former mayor of the town, Jan Roux, was stolen from the courtyard of the municipal building.

The statue, made by sculptor Piet Smit had been adorning the courtyard since 1999. All evidence indicates that the statue had been stolen for scrap metal.

Shortly after the incident a man was arrested with two pieces of the smashed up statue. Police followed more leads and eventually arrested a resident of Mooiwater in connection with the theft.
