Plans for new estate
2005-10-27
THE developer Tahir Salie, who has links with the Malaysian developer of Pearl Valley, proposes to redevelop about 3% of the farm Ongegund in Simondium (now known as Berg River Farms) as a residential agricultural estate.
The owner has applied for rezoning to allow the development of the farmstead and surrounding buildings as a guesthouse, with a tourist gift shop, tea room and restaurant at the gate on the R45.
In addition, the owner wishes to develop 14 single dwelling houses on sectional title erven of 600 square metres each on the river front, with 15 smaller sectional title units of 120 square metres each around the farm dam. Lofts will be encouraged instead of double storey buildings.
An existing causeway over the Berg River will link the larger western section with the eastern section of the farm, which borders on the Pearl Valley Golf Estate.
The intention is to ensure that the farm of 95 hectares continues as a working farm. This will create employment to the local community, especially those currently living on the farm.
The land next to the R44, on which 21 labourers’ cottages are situated, will be transferred to a Farm Workers Community Trust with security of tenure for residents, and the houses will be renovated and proper services (water sanitation and electricity) installed.
The workers will be trained in palisade fence construction and maintenance, road kerb manufacture and maintenance, and landscaping to be used during the development and later maintenance contracts.
They will also manage the gift shop and restaurant with business mentorship by the developer.
Motivated objections to the application, if any, must reach the municipal manager of Drakenstein by 14 November.
