The 44th running of the annual Breede River canoe marathon will also double as the Western Cape Canoe Union (WCCU) K2 long distance river championships and there is every likelihood that Deon Krige, the originator of this event, now retired to Stanford, will be at the race that was his brainchild back in 1967.
The WCCU has received 209 entries, which translates into approximately 418 paddlers (there are some single canoes and K3’s participating).
This figure will undoubtedly increase before the crews line up on Saturday, just upstream of the McGregor Bridge outside Robertson, to begin their 72 km journey downstream, via the overnight stop at Rigton Farm in Bonnievale, to the Kambati Resort, some 15 km upstream from Swellendam.
