NOW that the municipal workers’ strike has ended, the Drakenstein Municipality continues its series of ward elections, to promote community involvement in municipal affairs.
Each ward committee of ten volunteers will be involved in ward planning, in co-operation with the relevant ward councillor.
Ward 2 will meet tonight at 19:00 at the Andrew Murray Children’s Home in Wellington (councillor Johan Rademeyer). On Sunday afternoon there will be meetings at 15:00 at Saron library (councillor G Witbooi) and Gouda community hall (councillor J McHelm).
Next week’s meetings are on Monday at 19:00 at the VGK Newtown (councillor Aidan Stowman), on Tuesday at Happy Toddlers crèche (councillor Dr Thys Smith), on Wednesday at the NG Toringkerk hall (councillor Anré Koegelenberg), and on Thursday 8 September at Dalweide Primary (councillor Dr Lourens du Toit).
According to the speaker, Koos le Roux, it is hoped that these committees will improve the communication between the Council and residents, to ensure that local needs are met and are in line with the circumstances in each ward.
Each committee consists of up to ten members of the public from sector like youth, churches, sports and business, with the councillor serving as chairperson. Representatives must also be geographically representative of the ward. Any registered voter in the ward (without municipal debt) can serve on the committee, except municipal employees.
The election process is co-ordinated by the Independent Electoral Commission and the Municipality.
Venues for the remainder of the meetings must still be finalised. For enquiries, phone the Speaker’s office on 021 807 3619.
