Woman charged with perjury after false claims

A 52-year-old woman from Franschhoek has been charged with perjury after having made a false statement under oath with the police.

This comes after a shop assis-tant claimed that she had been attacked at her work place, Isabelina, in Franschhoek.

Under oath, she stated that while she was cashing up, she was approached by two black males who assaulted her and left her unconscious.

She furthermore said that her assailants then took the large amount of cash and they fled.

After finding discrepancies in her statement, Lieut Charles Riffel and Const Dominica Carollisen further interrogated the complainant. They suspected that a wound on her hand was self inflicted and there were no injuries to her head which could cause unconsciousness.

The complainant eventually admitted that she had staged the robbery and had taken the money herself.

She handed the full amount of money back to the owner of the shop. Michelle Loudon was arrested on a charge of perjury.

The owners of the shop expressed their gratitude towards the police for the swift recovery of their money and for exposing the suspect.

Franschhoek police spokesperson, Const Marize Papier, warned the public not to lay false charges as this will lead to criminal charges.
