THE Drakenstein Rugby Mayoral Cup for schools was officially launched on Saturday by the Executive Mayor, Councillor Gesie van Deventer, and the Springbok rugby coach, Peter de Villiers, at Boland Stadium in Wellington.

The mayor asked role players to take hands with her to make this event a success. It is a project funded for the benefit of the community from her discretionary budget.

“I ask you to please help us, not with money, but with your time. This project is for the youth, who are the custodians of hope for our future success,” emphasised Councillor van Deventer.

“Help us build Drakenstein into a City of Sport.”

The Springbok coach encouraged the young people to believe in themselves: “You can only be free if you stand up for yourself and believe in yourself.”

The President of Boland Rugby Union, Francois Davids, applauded the Executive Mayor for what she is doing for sport in Drakenstein.

“Sport unites people and you have a passion for sport and creative ideas on how it can be used to unite people,” said Davids.

The Rugby Mayoral Cup Tournament will take place from 3 to 7 October at the Dal Josaphat Stadium. Participating schools in the tournament come from Paarl, Wellington, Simondium, Mbekweni, Saron, Hermon and Gouda.

The final game will take place on 22 October at the Boland Rugby Stadium.
