Why was Paarl Mall dirty so soon?

ONE wants to applaud the beautiful new Mall with three loud hurrahs, but unfortunately there is a rather prickly thorn in my side.
Why, oh why, do we have to be such litterbugs? Ice-cream, colddrinks and other unmentionable items left black, unsightly marks on the polished floors and by Saturday afternoon the discarded wrappers, bottles and tins suffocated the plants in the centre, as well as in the flower beds outside.
Shame on you! We have always complained about the street vendors who dirty the central business distric of Paarl. If it were them littering at the Mall, they are incognito.
I must say, however, a trash bin here and there will do wonders. And a few cleaners at the weekend will be greatly appreciated.
Still complaining
Paarl Mall Centre Manager, André Williams, replies: A sincere apology to all who encountered similar problems during the opening week of the new Paarl Mall.
We appreciate the fact that you feel strongly about your Mall and we were disappointed with the fact that the specially designed bins for the Mall were not ready in time for the opening.
Please be assured that temporary bins have now been supplied and placed throughout the Mall.
Of course we agree with you that a clean, well-organised environment is the very least that you should expect in a shopping centre - the truth of the matter is, although we had hoped for a successful opening, we certainly didn’t anticipate that more than 200 000 feet would pass through the Centre in just four days!
In all fairness to the cleaning company that was awarded the Paarl Mall contract, these numbers exceeded all our expectations. The Prestige Group was awarded the cleaning contract not only because of their impeccable track record (they already have contracts in other major Paarl-based organisations, such as KWV and Tiger Brands) but also because of the very real effort they have made to provide local employment opportunities.
May we take this opportunity to thank the residents of Paarl for such a warm welcome - your response has shown us that Paarl Mall is indeed the retail therapy you’ve been waiting for and, now that we’ve caught our breath, please be assured that our new brooms are busy sweeping clean in anticipation of your next visit.
