New sewage works planned
2005-11-03
THE sewage infrastructure of Paarl and Wellington needs to be upgraded urgently due to urban development.
In the short term the Municipality plans to link the Wellington sewage works with the Paarl sewage works via a pipeline.
Not only must the Paarl sewage works itself be enlarged by 33%, but an additional bulk gravity pipeline will have to be built from Paarl South to increase capacity.
In the long term (by 2024) an additional sewage works will have to be developed due to the residential expansion of Paarl in a southerly direction.
Consultants have been appointed to identify and proclaim the terrain for a new regional sewage works for the rural area south of the N1.
Sites which are under consideration include Drakenstein Prison (next to the existing sewage works at the prison), near the Berg River in the vicinity of Paarl Brickfields, and on Parys farm (next to the Paarl Arboretum).
