Clean and grean is great

WE want to appeal to the public sector and NGO’s to become involved in our Clean and Green Project, said Alderman Clarence Johnson, Mayor of the Winelands District Municipality, at a meeting in Mbekweni.
He addressed the participants of the second clean and green campaign in the area and said to capitalise on tourism, one had to clean up the neighbourhoods. Another important reason for the campaign is the pollution of the Berg River.
While this is not the result of squatting or Mbekweni alone, it is imperative to inform these communities about the risks of polluted water and get them to clean up the water furrows and rivers feeding the Berg River.
Mayor Johnson said the clean-up project would create a partnership between the community and the district municipality, as well as between the district and local municipalities.
The project is furthermore looking to the creation of jobs and thus the alleviation of poverty.
“A great many women benefited from the project and they will see to it that the money they earned cleaning the area will reach the target groups - women and children.”
District council had budgeted R1,2 million towards the Clean and Green Project this year, but in future more money would be channelled this way, Johnson said.
They are also looking into national and provincial funding.
The second campaign in the project came to an end in October.
However, there is still some money left in the budget and this will be used to address hotspots like the Boontjies River in Chicago and the open channel in Newtown and Mbekweni. Work on this will start in November.
