First defeat for Paarl

First defeat for Paarl

2005-03-03

THE Novel Paarl cricket team went off the boil in Pniel over the weekend, where the log leaders suffered their first defeat of the season in the Boland’s Super league competition.
Coronation won by three wickets after bowling out the visitors for 164.
The 19-year-old Lee-Roy Walters (61) was the only batsman showing application, hitting six boundaries before being caught when opening his shoulders.
At 11/3, Paarl never looked like getting to three figures, due to an immaculate line bowled by Jacques van Wyk (4/23) and Henry Davids (3/22).
Davids (30) hit three sixes and two boundaries to give Coronation a good start, but Paarl fought back well to get back into the game at 114/7.
A solid rear guard action by Van Wyk (26no 4x3, 6x1) and Dawie Morris (28no 4x2, 6x1), however, saw the home team win in the 42nd over.
Paarl’s Clint Philander (4/59) showed a lot of guts with the ball.
Team manager Angelo Carolissen is confident that this was only a temporary setback, and that his team will be back at their best against Young Peoples at Dal Josaphat on Saturday.
Paarl II (212) went down by the same margin against Coronation II at the Groot Drakenstein grounds, and will now have to pull out all the stops to retain the trophy won over the last two seasons.
Lindsay van der Berg (31), Kurt Martin (67) and Heinrich Daniels (30) fought a lone battle for the visitors, but Coronation reached the target with one over to spare.
Richard Lackay (78) and Ralph Lackay (37) excelled with the bat, while Paarl’s Richard Cunningham boasted with 3/59.
At the Parys Grounds, Paarl IV went down against Touws River and it was left to Paarl III to save the club from a white wash.
They beat Van der Stel III by 36 runs, after William Petersen (37), William Wilson (66) and Alan Alexander (43) took the home teams’s total to 220 in 50 overs.
Although the visiting Gerrie Jordaan took 5/36 and then scored 31 runs, it was not enough to prevent the home team from winning easily.
Superb bowling by Yusree Booysen (3/32), Neville Adams (3/23) and Charl du Plessis (2/30) dismissed Van der Stel for 184.
The full programme for Saturday is Novel Paarl against Young Peoples at Dal Josaphat, Paarl II against Young Peoples at the Parys Grounds, Paarl III against Paarl East at New Orleans and Paarl IV against Swellendam in Swellendam.
