Bikers roar into town

MORE than 1700 motorcycles roared through Wellington at the weekend - drawing smiles from businessmen and frowns from peace-loving residents.
It was the annual “toy run” held during the Cobra Rally attended by 3000 people camping at Antoniesvlei resort on the slope of Bain’s Kloof and bringing toys for the town’s children.
While opening a new gallery at the foot of the mountain pass Friday late afternoon, mayor Herman Bailey could not ignore the roars and the revs of the arriving contingent.
“The town council was apprehensive at first about allowing the rally, but with the goodwill and the revenue generated last year, there was no question about not welcoming them in Wellington again,” the mayor said.
He was overwhelmed by the thousands of toys the bikers brought along for distribution in the local schools.
“Please don’t write anything bad about the bikers,” said one liquor store owner.
“As did other businesses, we nearly ran out of stock.” Residents closer to Bain’s Kloof do not share his views.
“I am sure the Paarl Post will receive many letters of complaint,” a man said.
“I honestly hope the motorcycles are not allowed again. Should they be, however, I will make sure that I have a stall selling wood and ice. That way I can make enough money to buy a house somewhere else.”
