A different kind of fly swatting
2005-11-10
THE second fly fishing competition for the Physically Disabled was hosted at the Dewdale Fly Fisheries on Saturday.
The event, sponsored by Nedbank, aims to promote this sport among people in wheelchairs and establish a structure whereby a national team can be selected to represent South Africa.
Although the 20 or so participants on Saturday were all relatively new to the sport, they fished with great vigour and enthusiasm.
After a morning spent trying their luck along the water side the fly fishers were treated to a braai by the Lions Club of Franschhoek.
Prizes were also given to those who showed some talent and to those who just would not give up despite the fishes’ refusal to bite.
Tony Prout of Durbanville and Billy Giessenburg of Strand shared the first spot with both catching the largest fish.
Prout was unceremoniously rechristened Tony Trout after landing a very decent one pound (500g) rainbow trout.
Tony Williams also of Brackenfell secured the third spot.
The winners received a complete fly fishing rod.
One of the three consulation prizes went to Thomas Micklem of Paarl for his determination, while Gavin Maggott of Pineland earned his prize after losing the most flies.
A lady Cleone Melnichenko of Cape Town secured the final prize for catching the smallest fish of the day.
