Farmers meet on BEE
2005-11-10
AGRI Wes-Cape is holding public participation meetings across the province following a request from the National Minister of Agriculture, Thoko Didiza, for comment on the pilot committee report on black economic empowerment in the agricultural sector.
The Paarl meeting was held yesterday afternoon and another one will be held in Worcester today at 14:00 at the Cape Agri members’ hall.
The pilot committee presentation follows an announcement on BEE in July last year by Minister Didiza which led to much controversy in the industry.
The Minister then appointed a steering committee of agricultural role-players to make alternative proposals on the subject.
The proposals were handed to Minister Didiza on 28 October and are now available on the National Department of Agriculture website (www. nda. agric.za).
Agri Wes-Cape CEO, Carl Opperman, said that time was of the essence, because Agri SA has to conclude its input by month-end to participate in the proposed Indaba on 6 and 7 December.
