Learnerships for cellar workers

Learnerships for cellar workers

2005-11-17

ON 29 October, the first Wine Processing Learnership for employees was launched in Franschhoek.

This qualification is offered to 16 previously disadvantaged cellar workers from local wineries in order to capacitate them towards a bright future in winemaking.

It is the first employed learnership of this kind, which will offer a qualification concluding in a National Certificate in Wine Making.

It is funded by grants from AgriSeta and the FoodBev Seta in co-operation with employers.

The training provider is the Ethics & Leadership Institute (ELI), a Human Resources Development Practitioner that focuses on sustainable development of farm workers and secondary agriculture-related industry workers.

Learners who will benefit from the project come from Vrede & LUst, Grande Provence, La Couronne, Glenwood, Boschendal, Mont Rochelle and Lavenir.

The course includes maintenance of winery equipment, production management, wine marketing, wine styles, and winemaking.

Employers will be able to benefit from the discretionary grants made available for this purpose.
